Hengistbury Head Beach lies at the most eastern end of an 9.5 mile continuous strip of golden beaches that runs from Sandbanks via Bournemouth and Boscombe. The beach is relatively unspoilt and free from the usual commercialism found elsewhere. Generally the beach is sandy with sections of shingle and backed by sand dunes and sandy cliffs towards the end. There is no lifeguard service on this beach.

Hengistbury Head is not only popular for its beach but it is a favourite with walkers, particularly visitors with dogs since dogs are allowed on the beaches all year round. The whole area is a designated as a Local Nature Reserve, a Site of Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. Paths lead up to the top of the Headland from which you get spectacular panoramic views of the nature reserve, Christchurch Harbour, Mudeford Sandbank, Mudeford Quay, Poole Bay and across to the Needles on the Isle of Wight.
Facilities at Hengistbury Head include a large car park (see below for car park charges and details), the Hiker Cafe next to the car park with public toilets. A land train runs between the cafe and Mudeford Sandbank, otherwise it’s a 20 minute walk. At the excellent Hengistbury Head Visitors Centre you can learn about the flora and fauna and the history of the area. https://www.visithengistburyhead.co.uk/ The centre is packed with interactive displays and run by friendly and enthusiastic volunteers. Evidence shows that people have lived and worked on the site for around 12,000 years. During the Bronze Age, around 4,000 years ago, Hengistbury Head became a place for ceremony and ritual and there is evidence of burial mounds. For more info visit the Visitor Centre or their website.
